Beyond Steak: Exploring the Versatility of Chimichurri
Chimichurri, the vibrant green sauce that is originally from Argentina, is more than just a delicious topping for grilled steak. While traditionally featuring parsley as a key ingredient, this recipe offers a unique twist, showcasing the versatility of this flavorful condiment. The star ingredient here is cilantro, and boy it’s a banger.
This Chimichurri Recipe Reimagined
This version embraces the spirit of a traditional chimichurri – a vibrant blend of herbs, spices, and acidity – while allowing for customization to suit your palate. When you make this, feel free to adjust the ingredients to suit your palate.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup chopped cilantro
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 red chili, minced (adjust to your desired heat level)
- 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
- 1/2 cup olive oil
- 1 lime juiced
- ½ shallot finely minced
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Combine Ingredients: In a bowl, combine all ingredients.
- Mix Well: Whisk vigorously until all ingredients are well combined and the sauce is emulsified.
- Taste and Adjust: Taste and adjust seasonings to your preference.
- Hand chopping: You can mince, dice and chop all the herbs by hand but you can also use a food processor. I prefer the texture of the chopped more, but follow your heart.
Beyond the Steak:
- Compound Butter: Soften butter and fold in a generous amount of chimichurri. Use this on grilled bread, roasted vegetables, or even as a topping for fish. My recipe is here.
- Marinade Magic: Marinate chicken, pork, or fish in chimichurri for 1 or 2 hours for intensely flavorful results.
- Sauce for Seafood: Spoon chimichurri over grilled salmon, shrimp, or even grilled octopus for a burst of fresh flavor.
- Dressings and Dips: Use chimichurri as a base for salad dressings or as a dipping sauce for empanadas or arepas.
This recipe is just a guide for you to expand on; feel free to experiment with different herbs and spices to create your own unique chimichurri. Whether you’re grilling, roasting, or simply enjoying a simple salad, this versatile sauce is sure to elevate your culinary creations. I have shared many recipes here which reference or encompass a chimichurri including steaks, but wait until you try my Chimichurri Wings.
